Our work experience program offers the opportunity to gain valuable experience of the publishing industry.
You would gain an insight into the day-to-day workings of all aspects of a small publisher and could be involved in all areas of the process of publishing from the initial idea behind a book, market research, developing sales material, updating websites and databases and other projects right through to the book launch.
Duration:1 - 3 months
Office Hours: Tuesday - Friday, 10am - 4.30pm (longer by arrangement)
Pay: Sorry, no, but there is a (very) small contribution to travel expenses.
Based: Harpenden, Herts., AL5
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
We are looking for enthusiastic graduates or final year undergraduates seeking experience in the world of publishing. You could be asked to perform any number of tasks relating to publishing (not just making the tea!) so you will need a flexible approach to work, prepared to have a go at anything (and everything!) that crops up.
As this is an unpaid position, the successful candidate would ideally be from the Harpenden area or within easy commuting distance.
IS THERE A DRESS CODE?
No. Dress tends to be casual unless you're out and about with us meeting the authors, the booksellers or the public.
CAN I TAKE TIME OFF TO ATTEND INTERVIEWS?
Of course. If anything crops up and you need time off then that's fine. We'd like to be as flexible as possible to help you in your career, though obviously it's up to you to make the most of this work experience opportunity.
WILL YOU HELP ME FIND A JOB AT THE END OF MY PLACEMENT?
We can give you advice on the kinds of companies that might want someone with your experience. We can write you a reference. You can use our computer facilities to apply for jobs and you can take time out to attend interviews.
We have numerous Publishing IT projects that need working on - most of which could be done remotely, with occasional face to face meets. Knowledge of PHP and InDesign would be an advantage. This could be a great opportunity to develop your CV and gain real-time experience working on our websites, on our databases, and helping explore the digital opportunities currently arising in publishing.
Simply use the form below to send us your CV and covering letter expressing your interest and any appropriate skills you think you might have, and if we like what we see we'll be in touch with you to ask you to come in and have a chat with us.
As is only to be expected there may be a lot of people chasing a limited number of placements so don't be downhearted if we don't respond.
